Retractable Derails
More convenient than a hinged derail. Derail shoe slides in and out of housing through the leverage of a waist-high operating lever. No need to bend or stoop to activate or deactivate the derail. Work from a comfortable standing position alongside the track.
Effective derailing depends on:
- Proper derail size and installation
- Normal switching speed travel.
- Flat track -- no grades.
- Fully exposed track -- derailed wheels need to sink into the ties and ballast.
- Ample room for derailment. A derailed car may travel a car length or more before stopping, depending on speed
- Rail condition must be #1 relay or better.
- In curved track, install on outside rail.
